Newburyport Citywide Carbon Challenge Kick-off

Mayor Donna Holaday, City Councilors and school principals, along with Alan Palm from the Alliance for Climate Education (ACE), will kick off the citywide Carbon Challenge on Tuesday April 27th at the River Merrimac Grille.

The Newburyport Carbon Challenge is a household energy efficiency awareness initiative. Municipal employees were "challenged" on April 1st to participate in the challenge, and now its time for the rest of the city to jump on board. Our local challenge is supported by the research and tools of the New England Carbon Challenge, which is a partnership between Clean Air-Cool Planet and the University of New Hampshire.

Alan Palm will deliver a presentation followed by Mayor Holaday challenging Ward Councilors and school principals to have their constituents join in.

The City of Newburyport is working to become a designated Green Community, for which five criteria must be met. One of these is to determine an energy-use baseline, or carbon footprint, of all municipal buildings and to commit to a 20% reduction in energy use over five years. While the city works on these tasks, a household carbon challenge will encourage residents to understand how to reduce their own carbon footprint.

Join us at the Merrimac Grille for this fabulous kick-off event!

Cash bar will be available.
