Earth
Day 2010, the 40th anniversary of the
original Earth Day celebration, is fast approaching. As expected, the Greater
Newburyport Area is going to be alive with many activities for all
ages and interests--some of which start as early as this weekend. Newburyport
is also hosting the Literary Festival on the
weekend of April 23rd & 24th, so get ready for a fabulous spring in our
community.
The Eco Collaborative is continuously updating the Earth Day Calendar but
we'd like to highlight several events coming up in the next week in this issue
of our Eco-Flash.
- Saturday
April 10th, 10am to 4pm, Hamilton-Wenham GREEN is hosting a one day Green Living
Fair, with Kevin O'Connor of This Old House, and our own Connect the Dots,
hosting a 5 Cent "Ask the Expert" booth. (Connect the Dots is
professional collaboration between Juli MacDonald, Architect, Lisa Kawski,
Interior Designer, and Matthew Ulrich, Landscape Architect)
- Saturday April 17th, Newburyport Clean Sweep:
city-wide park clean-up. Bring your family and friends to an opening breakfast
at 9am at Cashman Park, then off to your favorite park.
- Saturday, April 17th, 10am to 2:30pm, New Eden Collaborative
at the First Parish Church in Newbury, is hosting two gardening workshops.
Sheet mulch and double dug garden beds will be discussed in detail. Register
early, and online for savings.
- Sunday, April 18th, 9:30am to Noon, Plum Island Beach Clean-up. Meet at the
playground at the northern end of the island.
- Sunday, April 18th, 5:30pm. Fourth Annual Interfaith Blessing of the Earth
at the First Parish Church in Newbury. Followed by a community Potluck and
bonfire.
- Saturday & Sunday, April 17th & 18th, Weekend Celebration at Arrowhead Farm. Learn
first hand how a Sustainable Farm Eco-Systems works. One hour 'walk and talk"
tours at 11:30, 1:30 and 3:30 both days. Informational talks on how a CSA
functions at 11, 1 and 3pm. Arrowhead's Living Salad Bowls will be available
for purchase.
Also, you may have read about Mayor Holaday being the
first in the city to register for the Newburyport Carbon Challengeon April 1st. The
first phase of this unique challenge is being taken on by the City's employees,
and the residential challenge will follow starting April 27th. More details here, and look for a
future Eco-Flash that will highlight this special event.
